LEC SNA Summer School - Freeware to Support Learning & literacy (venue U.L. Assistive Technology Lab) - Conor Hartigan (tutor)

LEC is presenting a one day seminar which will provide professional development in Freeware to support Literacy. This course will cover a range of free literacy support software and strategies available to all windows users. The strategies covered are comparable to other professional software, such as read & write and claroread, which are commonly recommended for pupils with specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia.

Who would benefit from attending this course:

·         Attendees who have completed the read & write gold course

·         SNA’s who are supporting pupils with limited funding options

·         SNA’s who are required to support a wide range of learning/literacy difficulties

·         Those seeking to expand their knowledge of assistive technology to support students with disabilities

Course aims:

·         To understand the role of this type of assistive technology in helping pupils with specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia

·         Develop knowledge and awareness of the free software and accessibility features available in the windows operating system to support literacy and learning.

·         To be able to peer-support colleagues in the use of the technology and teach pupils how to use the software as the need arises

·         To be aware of the issues that can lead to the abandonment of assistive technology

Course Content

·         Learn the strategies available to support pupils with learning and literacy difficulties

·         Develop knowledge and awareness of the free software and accessibility features available in the windows operating system to support literacy and learning.

·         Develop skills and knowledge to learn more about the technology independently after the course.

·       Explore the practicalities of managing this type of software and associated hardware, such as laptops and scanners in school.

All our SNA Summer School courses are booked on the condition that the course fee is non-refundable. Course Fees are not transferrable to another SNA. Unfortunately, if you wish to cancel your place on one of our courses or you are unable to attend the course, we are not in a position to refund fees.

In the event that the minimum number of participants required do not apply then the Centre will be obliged to cancel the course and all monies will be refunded in full.
