Lets Talk Parents! Engaging and working with Parents of Primary School Children: Parent-teacher meetings and beyond

Teachers have an extremely important role in a child’s life. As teachers, we often see behaviours that differ greatly to what is seen in the home and this can be difficult to portray to parents/primary care-givers. This one-hour webinar will explain why behaviours may differ in the home and at school and give useful ideas, tools and methods to working collaboratively with parents/primary caregivers of primary school childran. Ideas will be given on how to effectively structure parent-teacher meetings, to promote a positive relationship with parents, whilst always keeping the needs of the child to the fore. Strategies will be discussed on how to manage conflict and successfully discuss our role as teachers, and how we can use a triangular approach with parents/primary care-givers. This webinar is suitable for all primary school teachers, principals, SET and SNAs.

Learning Outcomes

- Reflect on their own experience of meeting parents, presenting issues they may have encountered and how to overcome them.
- Gain knowledge on effective structure an approach to parent/teacher meetings, that put the needs of the child to the fore.
- Become aware of the importance of a triangular and collaborative approach to working with parents & when/how to approach parents with confidentiality and discretion.

Debbie Cullinane is a mother of 2, qualified child and adolescent psychotherapist, play therapist and runs her own private practice in Co Mayo.
