Words That Work. Practical Behaviour Redirection Strategies for SNAs and Teachers
Webinar Description
Every interaction with a student has the potential to either increase stress or create safety. The words we choose matter.
This practical webinar explores how simple changes in language can reduce conflict, build trust and support self-regulation without compromising expectations. Rather than relying on commands, criticism or power struggles, participants will learn how to redirect behaviour using respectful, clear and relationship-based communication.
Drawing on evidence-informed approaches including co-regulation, restorative practices, declarative language and neuro-affirming supports, this session provides ready-to-use scripts for everyday classroom situations.
Participants will leave with practical phrases they can begin using immediately, along with an understanding of why these approaches are more effective in promoting engagement, emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar participants will be able to:
- Understand why language influences behaviour, emotional regulation and relationships.
- Recognise how common phrases can unintentionally escalate challenging situations.
- Use practical behaviour redirection scripts that maintain student dignity.
- Apply strategies that promote co-regulation rather than confrontation.
- Adapt behaviour redirection for autistic students and students with additional support needs.
- Work consistently as a team using shared language across the classroom.
