Leading the Provision of SEN in Mainstream Primary Schools: A webinar for Primary SEN Coordinators

This course will look at the process of reviewing and developing SEN Policies in a Mainstream Primary School.

It will look at - 

• Planning & Coordinating SEN Provision
• Models of Provision (including Team-teaching)
• Mentoring & Supporting Newly Appointed SETs
• Developing SEN School Policies
• Communication with Stakeholders including parents, health services & other agencies.
• Transition of pupils from pre-school and into second level.
• Preparing for an SEN evaluation by the Inspectorate
• Available SEN resources

Learning Outcomes

The participants will:
• Become familiar with DES, NCSE and PDST resource documents providing
information regarding the provision of SEN in primary schools.
• Understand the principals that underpin of the SEN provision model and the steps that schools are required to follow in planning, implementing and reviewing support plans for pupils with SEN.
• Examine resources and templates that will facilitate more efficient planning, monitoring
and review of pupil progress.
• Compare the merits of the various models of SEN provision.
• Engage with a variety of strategies designed to support NQTs and new SETs.
• Become familiar with a model of engagement involving all stakeholders to facilitate the review and development of school SEN policy.

Facilitator: Dr Celia Walsh

Dr. Celia Walsh is a former SET, Primary Principal & Director of Waterford Teachers Centre. She completed her M St in SEN in Trinity College, while her Doctoral research at Dublin City University examined the leadership and management of SEN provision in mainstream primary schools. She lectures part-time in educational leadership at the University of Limerick, while also providing online CPD in SEN through the Education Centre network and facilitating school staffs in developing effective SEN policy and practice. Her areas of educational interest include teacher professional networks, promoting school inclusion and developing effective school leadership.
